There is something incredibly special about bringing a newborn home.
It’s the place where you’ll spend those quiet early mornings, the middle of the night feedings, the endless cuddles, and all of those little moments that somehow become memories before you even realize they’re happening.
That’s exactly what I love about in-home newborn sessions.
Recently, I spent the morning with Lindsey, Mitchell, their three year old son Julian, and their brand-new baby girl, Claudia, in their home. The session was warm, intimate, and completely centered around their family.
And that is really the heart of an in-home session.

Your home becomes part of the story
In-home family sessions are lifestyle sessions, rather than traditional posed studio portraits.
I’m not bringing a backdrop, a basket, and a collection of props and posing setups into your living room. Instead, we use the spaces you already love and the things that make your home yours.
The colors, furniture, textures, windows, nursery, bedrooms, couch, kitchen, and little details throughout your home all become part of your photographs.
I may bring a flash with me if we need a little help with the light, but otherwise, I love working with the natural light that is already there.
The result is a gallery that feels personal to your family, rather than something that could have been photographed in anyone’s home.

Newborn photos without all the posing
I don’t photograph traditional posed newborn portraits when I’m in your home.
Instead, I focus on relaxed, natural interaction and simple posing.
Your baby might be curled up peacefully in their crib, tucked into your arms, resting on your chest, or simply being held while you take in those tiny newborn details.
There is no pressure to keep a baby perfectly posed or asleep.
And there doesn’t need to be.
Some of my favorite newborn photographs are the ones where nothing particularly complicated is happening. A parent looking down at their baby. Tiny fingers wrapped around yours. A sibling meeting their new baby. A little one snuggled into the place where they already feel safest.
Those moments are enough.

And then there’s the big sibling
One of the things I especially love about photographing newborns at home is how much easier it can be for older siblings to be themselves.
Three year olds don’t necessarily want to sit perfectly still in a studio and cooperate for a series of portraits.
And honestly?
I don’t need them to.
At home, they can play. They can show me their room. They can climb onto the couch with their parents. They can interact with their new sibling when they’re ready.
For Julian, being at home meant he could be comfortable in his own space while we photographed him becoming a big brother to Claudia.
Sometimes the best way to get a genuine photograph of a child is to stop asking them to pose.

Your family doesn’t have to look a certain way
That’s probably my favorite part of lifestyle photography.
Your home doesn’t need to be perfect.
Your toddler doesn’t need to cooperate perfectly.
Your newborn doesn’t need to sleep through the entire session.
And you don’t need to know how to pose.
I’ll guide you when needed, but I’m much more interested in letting your family interact naturally and documenting what happens in between.
Because these photographs aren’t really about creating the perfect newborn picture.
They’re about remembering what it felt like to bring this baby home.
The way you held them.
The way your older child looked at them.
The tiny nursery you spent months preparing.
The couch where you’ll spend countless hours feeding and cuddling.
The home where your family became just a little bit bigger.
Years from now, those details may look different.
But you’ll have photographs that bring you right back to this moment.

In-home sessions aren’t just for newborns
This approach works beautifully for families of all ages, too.
You don’t have to have a new baby to have a meaningful session at home.
A family baking together in the kitchen. Kids playing in their bedrooms. Reading books on the couch. A dance party in the living room. Snuggles in Mom and Dad’s bed.
Your home gives us a setting that already means something to you.
And instead of trying to make your family fit into a particular style of portrait session, we create photographs around your family, your personalities, and your life.
Because sometimes the most meaningful place to photograph your family…
is the place where your family actually lives.
