A Romantic Engagement Session at Hammond Castle in Gloucester, Massachusetts

There is something undeniably magical about photographing an engagement session in a place with a story of its own. For Haley and Matt’s engagement session, we spent the day exploring Hammond Castle in Gloucester, Massachusetts, and it was the perfect setting for a session that felt completely different from the ordinary.

Exploring Hammond Castle with Haley & Matt

From the moment we arrived, there was so much to take in. Hammond Castle is filled with incredible architectural details, historic spaces, stone walls, dramatic windows, courtyards, and little corners that make you want to stop and look around.

One of my favorite parts of photographing at a location like this is exploring it with fresh eyes. Rather than simply moving from one obvious photo spot to another, Haley, Matt, and I spent time wandering through the castle and finding creative ways to use the spaces around us.

Every room had something different to offer.

A beautiful doorway could become the backdrop for an intimate portrait. A stone corridor created a completely different mood. The architecture gave us opportunities to play with symmetry, framing, texture, and light, while still keeping the focus on Haley and Matt and the connection between them.

Finding New Ways to Photograph a Familiar Type of Session

One of the things I love most about engagement sessions is that they don’t have to feel like a series of posed photographs.

Instead, I want my couples to feel like they’re experiencing something together.

Exploring Hammond Castle gave us the opportunity to do exactly that. We moved through the property, discovered new spaces, experimented with different compositions, and found little moments of connection along the way.

There was something especially fun about looking at a historic space and asking, How can we photograph this differently?

The castle’s architecture became part of the story without overpowering the couple. The result was a collection of images that felt romantic, editorial, and timeless while still feeling like Haley and Matt.

A Historic Setting for a New Chapter

There is also something beautifully symbolic about photographing an engagement session somewhere so steeped in history.

Hammond Castle has witnessed decades of stories, while Haley and Matt are beginning a new chapter of their own. Being able to document this particular season of their relationship surrounded by so much history made the session feel even more meaningful.

And, of course, exploring a castle together makes for a pretty memorable date.

By the end of the session, we had photographed so many different looks and locations throughout the property, each one offering something completely different. From dramatic architectural portraits to quieter, more intimate moments, the variety made this session especially fun to create.
