One of Those Simple Moments That Meant Everything

Sometimes the best memories come from the simplest plans.

Recently, my family and I decided to try geocaching for the first time. If you’ve never done it before, it’s essentially a real-life treasure hunt using GPS coordinates to find hidden containers, called caches, tucked away in everyday places.

What made it even better? We discovered there are actually two caches within walking distance of our home, which made it the perfect low-key adventure for a regular day.

We headed out to find the first cache, excited and not totally sure what to expect.

But when we got there, something unexpected happened.

The family who owns the property and maintains the cache was literally there at that exact moment, relocating it. As it turns out, woodpeckers had destroyed the original container it had been stored in.

Of all the timing… we showed up right in the middle of them fixing it.

We all kind of laughed about it, because what are the odds? It felt like one of those funny little coincidences that just makes a moment more memorable.

Since they were still setting it up, we decided to move on and come back later.

We walked down the street to the second cache, and this time we were able to find it.

That’s when we realized something… we had completely forgotten to bring anything to leave behind.

If you’ve never gone geocaching, part of the experience is taking something small and leaving something in return. And of course, we showed up empty-handed.

But then my daughter quietly pulled out her sketchbook.

She sat down right there and drew a small leaf, carefully tearing it out and placing it inside the cache.

It was such a simple moment, but it completely changed the experience. Instead of leaving something random, she left something personal. Something she created.

And honestly, that ended up meaning so much more.

On our way home, we stopped back at the first cache to see if it had been reset.

This time, it was ready, and hidden really well.

It was just a tiny bottle tucked inside a hole in a tree. You had to really look for it, which suddenly made a lot of sense as to why woodpeckers had destroyed the original container.

After a little searching, we found it.

Inside was a tiny rolled-up log, and we added our names to it before carefully putting everything back the way we found it.

It wasn’t a big outing. We didn’t travel far. We didn’t plan anything elaborate.

But it turned into one of those days I know I’ll remember.

The coincidence of arriving at the exact moment the first cache was being fixed.
The laughter over our bad timing.
My daughter’s quiet, thoughtful drawing.
Finding that tiny bottle hidden in the tree.

These are the kinds of moments that don’t seem like a big deal while they’re happening, but somehow end up meaning the most later.

And honestly, they’re the same kinds of moments I always hope to capture during sessions. The unplanned ones. The in-between ones. The ones that feel real.

By the time we got home, we were already talking about doing it again.

But more than that, we started talking about creating our own cache right here on our property.

There’s something really special about the idea of other families walking by, stopping to search, and sharing that same kind of experience with their kids. The excitement, the curiosity, the little moments that turn into lasting memories.

The thought that something we place could become part of someone else’s day like that… it just feels really meaningful.

If you’ve never tried geocaching, I highly recommend it. You might be surprised at

how something so simple can turn into something you’ll always remember.

And if you already do it, I’d love to hear your favorite finds 😊
